பாண்டிக்கோவை

Pandikkovai poems belong to the 7th century A.D.  They are Akam poems in praise of the Pandiyan king Nedumaran who ruled from Madurai.  These 326 poems were embedded in Nakkeerar’s commentary for ‘Iraiyanar Kalaviyal’.

This translation has been checked by Dr. P. Marudanayagam, one of the great Thamizh scholars.  He also gave me many valuable suggestions.

I hope the readers use my translation and meanings to learn the original poems which are very sweet.

தலைவன் தலைவியைப் பற்றிச் சொன்னது
உரை உறை தீந்தமிழ் வேந்தன் உசிதன் தென்னாட்டு ஒளி சேர்
விரை உறை பூம்பொழில் மேல் உறை தெய்வம் கொல் அன்றி விண் தோய்
வரை உறை தெய்வம் கொல் வான் உறை தெய்வம் கொல் நீர் மணந்த
திரை உறை தெய்வம் கொல் ஐயம் தரும் இத் திரு நுதலே.

What the hero said about the heroine
In the southern land
of the Supreme One
where sweet Tamil
verses reside,
this young woman with a
lovely forehead makes me
doubt.

Is she a goddess who
lives in a bright, fragrant
flowering grove?
Is she a goddess who
resides in the sky?
Is she a goddess who
lives in the sky-brushing
mountains?
Or, is she a goddess
who lives on the waves
in the river?
